Huntsville residents have opportunity to take Sports Safety Course
Huntsville leading Alabama in participating in sports safety training
Huntsville, Ala. --- Tennis courts, swimming pools, golf courses as well as baseball, softball and soccer fields are or will soon be full of activity. Are you prepared to respond to safety issues such as injuries or weather precautions? The City of Huntsville's Recreation Services Department has partnered with the National Center for Sports Safety in educating the public on basic procedures for parents and coaches of youth sports.

Super Retriever Series returns to Huntsville
Group compliments Huntsville Sports Commission on event last year
Super Retriever SeriesHuntsville, Ala. --- Mayor Loretta Spencer and the Huntsville Sports Commission held a press conference today announcing that Huntsville has been selected again this year to host a national qualifying venue for the Super Retriever Series. The event will be held during the last week of October.
"The Huntsville Sports Commission made a tremendous effort last year to make the first time event for Alabama a success. It was well supported with more than 2,500 people attending the competitions," Mayor Spencer stated. "The Jones Family's farm was the perfect setting for the hunt tests and field trials last year, and I would like to thank them for providing the location again this year."

Recreation Services seeks to increase awareness of conduct at sports events
Huntsville, Ala. --- "Coach thrown out of game"..."Controversial call ignites brawl in stands" … "Athlete suspended after fight with spectator"…. Those examples of headlines show that across the nation the conduct of coaches, parents, fans and athletes at sporting events has become the attention of many media stories. With the beginning of spring and summer activities, The City of Huntsville is kicking off an effort to increase awareness of the importance of good sportsmanship.

Heart of Huntsville Drive provides additional downtown corridor
Project is completed at $119,548 under contract amount
Huntsville, Ala. --- Road work in Huntsville continues at a steady pace with 23 projects in active construction or under design to provide enhanced traffic movement through the city. Heart of Huntsville Drive opened after a ribbon cutting ceremony and the official first drive across the roadway by employees who have been involved in the project. The road has been completed at a total cost of $1,559,468.69 which is $52,228 under the contracted amount. Cost of the bridge was completed with the total cost of $1,393,712.86 which also was $67,320.26 under the contracted amount.

Huntsville beats 11 cities to win "Horton Hears You" Hometown Challenge
Special screenings of movie for everyone who participated in shout-out to be held at Monaco Pictures on Thursday, March 13
Huntsville, AL --- Chances are if you were downtown last Saturday night you heard Huntsville's answer to 20th Century Fox's "Horton Hears You" Hometown Challenge. Approximately 500 people raised their voices to say, "We are here! We are here!" Huntsville's efforts were successful in beating eleven other cities competing to be "Who-ville" for a day. The prize is an advance VIP screening of 20th Century Fox's movie "Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who!"

City's Community Development Department holds workday to kick-off Emergency Home Repair efforts this year
More than 80 volunteers participating
Huntsville, AL --- More than 80 volunteers from 13 area churches and volunteer organizations will join together to make needed exterior repairs on homes in Huntsville tomorrow. The City of Huntsville's Community Development Department is coordinating the workday which officially kicks off the year for the Emergency Home Repair Program.

2008 AIR POLLUTION CONTROL ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS
Huntsville, AL --- The Air Pollution Control Board of the City of Huntsville is inviting the submittal of nominations for the 2008 Air Pollution Control Achievement Awards Program. The awards program was established by the board in 1997 to recognize the voluntary efforts of industrial, commercial and institutional facilities to enhance air quality in Huntsville. Award recipients are selected on the basis of letters of nomination submitted to the Board for consideration. There are three categories of awards.

2009 Quarter Midget of America Eastern Grands to be in Huntsville
More than 800 competitors from coast to coast expected
Huntsville, Ala. --- The quarter midget car race track on East Schrimsher will be a blur of activity next year with 7 days of championship racing. Mayor Spencer and the Huntsville Sports Commission (HSC) announced at a press conference today that the 2009 Quarter Midget of America Eastern Grands will be held in Huntsville July 19 - 25, 2009. It is anticipated that 800 to 1,000 competitors ranging in age from 5 to 16 will compete.

Huntsville ranked a top "Green City"
Popular Science magazine recognizes nation's best cities for environmental living
Huntsville, Ala. --- Huntsville's recognition as one of the country's most environmental cities was furthered today by Popular Science magazine in its listing of "America's Top 50 Greenest Cities".

Using data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the National Geographic Society's Green Guide, the study collected information on U.S. cities with more than 100,000 people. The categories analyzed were electricity, transportation, green living, and recycling and green perspective.

Alabama High School Athletic Association State Wrestling Championships in Huntsville this week
First time event for city
Huntsville, Ala. --- More than 500 high school wrestlers competed at the Von Braun Arena for state bragging rights. The Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) announced last summer that its State Wrestling Championships would be held in Huntsville in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

"We are extremely proud to be the new host city for the championship," Mayor Spencer commented. "There is such a strong support for wrestling in Huntsville. I wish all the athletes good luck."

TIFs continue to stimulate local economy and aid school systems
Huntsville, AL --- Mayor Loretta Spencer announced at a press conference that the Tax Increment Finance (TIF) Districts continue to perform well and exceed expectations. Mayor Spencer began using the innovative approach to economic development after identifying many vital infrastructure needs including the need to build new schools and upgrade existing facilities.

"I am pleased to announce that our TIFs continue to spur development and assist the local school systems with needed funding," Mayor Spencer stated.

The Second Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Basketball Classic
Huntsville, AL ---- The Huntsville Sports Commission, Citgo Petroleum and Benson Oil Company are bringing a day of high school boys basketball action to Huntsville on Monday, January 21 with four local high school teams playing teams from Birmingham.

PUBLIC NOTICE: PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT MEETING FOR THE GOVERNORS DRIVE WIDENING PROJECT, PHASE II
At the public involvement meeting we discussed the upcoming Governors Drive widening, Phase II Project which will span from Gallatin Street to Bassett Street. During the meeting, an overview of the project was presented along with a public viewing of the construction plans.

This meeting took place on Thursday, January 17th, 2008 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the 1st floor conference room of the Public Services Building at 320 Fountain Circle.

Huntsville, Ala. --- Mayor Loretta Spencer expressed the city's appreciation to more than 900 volunteers who participated during 2007 in the Emergency Home Repair Program administered by the city's Community Development Department.

"As I visited some of the job sites this past year, I was overwhelmed with the generosity of time that so many gave to help others in our community," Mayor Spencer commented. "When you see the appreciation in the homeowners' faces you realize that the work done has impacted their lives tremendously. Huntsville, AL --- The City of Huntsville will have fencing and barricades placed around the perimeters of the Municipal Building and the Annex located at 308 Fountain Circle as a safety precaution.

"This action is the result of an ongoing review of the condition of the buildings' exterior marble-slab panels," Jeff Easter, director of the city's General Service Department stated.

Huntsville, Ala. --- Mayor Loretta Spencer, the City Council, and the Director of Huntsville's Department of Public Safety Chief Rex Reynolds marked a historic event with a ground breaking ceremony for the city's first combined fire & rescue and police facility. The facility will be on Clinton Avenue West.
"As our city continues to experience growth, providing the best public safety services is extremely important," Mayor Spencer commented. "This facility will provide ample opportunity for growth within the fire & rescue and police departments. The site also provides immediate access to several main roadways and the interstate."

First company locates in second phase of city's North Huntsville Industrial Park
GEO Solutions holds Ground Breaking Ceremony
Huntsville, Ala. --- Mayor Spencer joined representatives from GEO Solutions in a ground breaking ceremony for their new facility in North Huntsville Industrial Park. The company is the first to begin construction in the park's second phase.

"I appreciate GEO Solutions increased investment in our city," Mayor Spencer commented. "In 2001 we were able to form TIF 3A in this area. Your investment today contributes to the continued success of that TIF which provided $12 million for capital improvements to schools in north Huntsville."

Local dogs howl with excitement over new dog park
"Chip In" event celebrates "Dog Spot's" opening
Huntsville, Ala. --- The Dog Spot is Huntsville's first dog park. This wonderful, off-leash doggie play area is the size of two football playfields. Conveniently located in Huntsville's downtown area, the dog park is on Cleveland Avenue by the skateboard park.

"The city has had numerous requests to have a dog park and we are proud to be able to open the first in Huntsville," Mayor Loretta Spencer commented. "Thanks to the cooperation with the Alabama Department of Transportation we were able to make this one happen."

"Huntsville is a community that continues to reach out to those in need," Mayor Spencer stated. "This is a very easy way to help families and know that 100 percent of what you give is used toward paying the utility bills of those who qualify for assistance."

Mayor Spencer negotiates agreement with ALDOT to complete widening of Old Madison Pike
Huntsville, AL --- Mayor Loretta Spencer has received confirmation from the Alabama Department of Transportation Director Joe McInnes that ALDOT has revised the Old Madison Pike agreement to allow the city of Huntsville to use uncommitted Surface Transportation Program (STPHV) monies designated for Huntsville to complete the project.

Congressman Charles Dent requests briefing by Huntsville/Madison County Emergency Management Agency on community's preparedness for a nuclear/radiological event
Huntsville, AL --- U.S. Congressman Charles Dent (PA) has requested a meeting with John "Rusty" Russell, director of Huntsville/Madison County's Emergency Management Agency (EMA) and Kirk Paradise, Emergency Plans Coordinator for Huntsville/Madison County EMA. Congressman Dent is a member of the House Committee on Homeland Security and Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Emergency Communications, Preparedness and Response. Turner Universal Construction Company partners with city of Huntsville's Community Development Department to boost Emergency Home Repair Program

Mayor Spencer thanked the crew from Turner Universal Construction Company at the site of their first Emergency Home Repair project.
Huntsville, Ala. --- During 2006 a record number of volunteers assisted 91 homeowners in making needed exterior repairs. That record has already been surpassed with more than 900 volunteers assisting with 108 repair so far this year. Turner Universal Construction Company has offered its assistance on a continuing basis to aid the city's Community Development Emergency Home Repair Program. Jahazy Rooks returns to Huntsville as city's Director of Information Technology Services
Jahazy RooksHuntsville, AL --- Although he has moved 14 times to advance his career, Jahazy Rooks has always considered Huntsville home and the city of Huntsville is glad he has returned to lead the city's Information Technology Services Department.

The Big Spring Jam 5k Run is held in conjunction with the Big Spring Jam music festival at Big Spring International Park located in downtown Huntsville, Alabama. Start time of the 5K race is usually around 8:00 A.M. The Fun Run is held soon after the last runner in the 5K has finished, usually around 9 A.M.

Cell phones collected by Operation Green Team earn $5000 prize and more
Huntsville, Ala. --- The city of Huntsville's Operation Green Team was presented $5,000 at the national Keep America Beautiful Conference held in Memphis last week. The cash was the top national prize for the E-cycling Campaign held during KAB's Great American Cleanup. Across the nation 114 KAB affiliates participated in the campaign collecting a total of 2,338 old cell phones. Huntsville collected more than one-third of the total phones with 901 coming from our city. [More Details]
